Welcome to Week 4, let's cheer some more! We are going to challenge you this week to learn two new cheers: Yell out your colors Tigers and VICTORY. Make sure you are continuing to stretch, using tight motions, loud clear voices and spiriting. The VICTORY cheer is important to learn because you will use this cheer at the end of each game that your team wins! There are two videos below: one is a continuation of the 3 part series video from last week to get better hip & hamstring flexibility and improve your jumps. The other will focus on your core. This weeks task is to make sure you continue stretching, alternating conditioning, learn and demonstrate the two cheers.. You should be using tight motions, smiling and have fun with it. Athletic Website: pickeringtontigers.net Just DANCE.. it'll be okay! Welcome to Week 3. If you've been following along you have learned motions, jumps, a cheer, spiriting and now we are incorporating our traditional fight song dance. If you make any cheer squad this is one of the dances you will be expected to perform at the homecoming game along with the rest of the teams. If you make a varsity team you will do this dance EVERY GAME so it will need to be exemplary. Dance is a big part of cheerleading and you will demonstrate these skills at tryouts with a dance learned at a later date so this will be good practice. There are two videos below: one is a 3 part series we will post to get better hip & hamstring flexibility and improve your jumps. The other video is a mix of dance cardio and HIIT exercises to build strength and stamina, which is crucial for staying fit and to be able to cheer through long & hot games. In the video you will see three ripples-each girl in the video has a different ripple which means the part of the dance motions are broken down into different counts This weeks task is to make sure you continue stretching, alternating conditioning, pick a ripple of your choice and perform the fight song dance. You should be using tight motions, smiling and have fun with it. Email your best practiced performance to us at [email protected] . You survived week 1 doing jumps but now we need to correct our motions in order to clean up our appearance while we are jumping and cheering. This week you will focus on keeping your motions tight, voice projection, learning a cheer and adding spirit! When fans come to the game they love to see us cheering loudly and most of all spiriting. It keeps them excited and engages them to cheer with us. We hope you still continued to stretch and practice jumps throughout the week it is very important. We are adding workouts that you can practice alternating to build up your strength. For example don't only focus on lower body, or do it once and never again. Try to do at least one video up to 4-5 times a week. What is Spiriting? Spiriting is what we do in between and after cheers or dances. This can be smiling while waving you're arms simultaneously, an individual or team jump, a kick, tumbling or yelling GO TIGERS. One thing we NEVER DO is yell WHOOO! WHOO0=NOT Spiriting. Voice Projection-Make sure when you are cheering your team mates and crowd can hear you clearly but loudly and most importantly do not sing the cheers.Keep it natural to avoid sounding screechy yell with a natural relaxed voice. Make eye contact with the crowd and SMILE:) Cheerleaders Breathing Exercise - Diaphragm Breathing Use your voice from your diaphragm. This exercise will help you utilize your diaphragm in an efficient way and help to strengthen this muscle. Here's how to do it:
Important tip* When you are doing a cheer we say the words 3x then you end clean and spirit! This weeks tasks include: learning a cheer, practicing doing motions and showing spirit. You will email [email protected] a video of yourself demonstrating all motions and completing cheer (Tigers in the House). Please make sure the video is fully visible of yourself so coaches are able to give feedback. Good Luck!

For this weeks virtual open gym we ask that you perform these stretches and use these exercises to improve your jump technique. These are the following jumps you should be practicing : Pike, Varsity, Double Varsity, Left and Right Herkie and Hurdler.
