If you filled out our tryout interest form for cheerleading next school year you might of noticed we added a new addition called Game Day Competition.
What is Game Day? Game Day, as opposed to a Traditional competition routine, has a greater emphasis on crowd leading. The routine is composed of a band chant, offense/defense chant, cheer, followed by our fight song. (Good examples to watch can be found by searching @milforhs_cheer on IG or “Springboro Game Day Cheer” on YouTube. These are programs that we WILL compete against.) Expectations Respect There must be a mutual respect between athlete and coach for this season to be successful. As a coach, our expectation of you is that if we ask you to do something, you will execute it to the best of your ability with no complaints. As an athlete, you should expect that we as coaches will not ask you to participate in extraneous activities that have no benefit to you, or the team. More importantly, there needs to be a mutual respect between the athletes. Not only do you need to respect each other’s skill, but also have respect for each other as people. Timeliness We will not waste your time, and we expect the same from you. If practice starts at 6PM, the mats should be unrolled, and you should be stretched by this time. (Our expectation is that a senior will lead stretches, jumps, and a tumbling warm-up prior to a coach formally starting practice.) Commitment Practices cannot be mandatory until August 1st per OHSAA rules. However, we WILL have practices immediately following tryouts (at LEAST 3 times per week). This is because many of our competitors already have teams and routines at this point. While these practices are NOT mandatory, it is highly recommended that if you make the team, you are in attendance as we will be teaching the routine, working on team tumbling, and conditioning. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LEARNING ANY MATERIAL YOU HAVE MISSED! Once the season starts, we will maintain AT LEAST 3 practices per week (NOT including tumbling). However, leading up to big competitions (such as the Spirit Championship, OCCs, and States), expect the number of practices to increase. It is important to remember that competition is an extra! This means that if you make a sideline team, you may not make the competition squad. While it is meant to be fun, we still want to remember that we are competing to win!!! It’s also important to keep in mind that this is our first year competing Game Day and our first competition squad since the 2016-17 season. We (the coaches) are learning how this will work, just like you! Team Culture Our goal is to build an environment that encourages hard work, fun, and friendship. For this season to be successful, you all must bond with each other and feel comfortable enough to push each other. While competing, it will be you and your 16 other teammates on the mat. It is important that you can count on each other to execute your respective parts. Tumbling Requirements Back handsprings are MANDATORY, standing tucks are preferred. We will have mandatory tumbling for all members of the program. If you are placed on the competition team, it is MANDATORY that you are in tumbling the duration of our season (regardless of your sideline team selection). (During competitions, we will ONLY THROW STANDING TUCKS. However, we will offer a limited number of sign and flag spots to those with back handsprings.)
